Mecklenburg County Boy Scouts of America Scouting for Food

Dear Friends,

2020 has been a difficult year for our community, state and nation. The Covid epidemic has changed how we go about our daily lives and has impacted how we work, worship, and spend time with families and friends. For many of the most vulnerable residents in our community, it has meant a loss in family income, unemployment, and food insecurities. However, because of your hard work and efforts, when the pandemic hit in March 2020, Loaves & Fishes was ready to respond. Their warehouse and pantries were full because we had just completed another tremendously successful Scouting for Food effort. In 2020, our units collected over 278,000 lbs. of food that has been distributed to our neighbors in need! And boy was it needed!
The trends are indicating that the first quarter of 2021 is going to be another difficult time for our community. Your cheerful service made the difference in 2020 and we need to keep it going in 2021!

Saturday, February 6, 2021, is “Scouting for Food” collection day in Mecklenburg County Council. Sunday, February 7, 2021, is “Scout Sunday”. This special weekend in February is again our opportunity to deliver the promise of the Scouting program. We can again inspire youth and adult leaders, in and out of Scouting, to high levels of service and volunteerism. We can affirm that the BSA is the nation’s leading organization in providing community service, and we can heighten our community’s awareness of BSA’s service commitment.
Scouting for Food is the official “Good Turn for America” for the Mecklenburg County Council. As an organization, the Boy Scouts are dedicated to giving back to our communities. Scouting for Food teaches youth the value of helping others.

The 2021 Leader’s Guide contains important updates and changes to this year’s Scouting for Food program, along with contact information, important dates, history, food drop-off locations, and safety and courtesy notes. I apologize for it coming out late, but like many things this year, the Covid epidemic as created un-certainty around the Scouting for Food operation.

We want to “Thank you” in advance for your participation in Scouting for Food, and we ask for your patience in the event Covid restrictions cause us to make last minute changes to the program. We will do our best to keep you up-to-date.

Yours in Scouting,

Mark Turner
