Exploring

Frequently Asked Questions about Exploring

What is Exploring?

An adult led group of young adults involved in firsthand career exploration with businesses, government organizations, hospitals, professional firms, etc.

How does the Exploring division recruit young adult members?

The Exploring division provides career interest surveys to students in CMS schools. Information gathered from the surveys are supplied to particiapting organizations who invite students to join.

Do these programs run at night?

Yes, but some also meet after school when the business or organization is in full operation.

When do Exploring programs start?

Most of them start in early fall. The first meeting, called a "Firstnighter", is held in the evening so that parents may attend and learn about the program.

Who runs the program?

The chartered organization. They are experts in their field. An advisor is selected from within the company to guide Explorers through every facet of their industry, including field tours, etc.

How often do they meet?

About once a month during the school year.

What does the program cost?

Membership is $10, which allows a student to explore as many careers as they would like within the year registered.

After joining, do students have to attend the entire program?

No, that’s not the purpose of the program. Some students may want to try different fields. They may feel they are not suited for particular careers. The program is a decision making process, with room for exploring! Students that do complete a program will receive a letter of participation that may be used as a reference in the future.

Is this similar to job training?

No, not at all. It is only exposure to careers the students think they want. Again, it is a decision making process, a chance to select rather than settle.

In-School Exploring compliments the Community Based Exploring District.  This program was implemented to provide youth with the benefits of the Learning for Life programs in their schools throughout Mecklenburg County.  The program allows educators to reinforce the core curriculum with career and character education while improving classroom behavior. The district consists of middle school Learning for Life Groups and high school Exploring Posts.  In-School Exploring district programs focus on the following:

Career Development—Students may participate in a variety of community based Exploring Posts where they learn about a career of their interest and earn a half elective school credit.  The program also provides a speaker’s bureau of successful professionals that discuss with students critical employment skills, qualifications for careers and job preparedness

Character Education—Life Choices Game—The game lets high school students run through real-life situations, making choices that may have unpredictable outcomes.  Character Education Scenarios-Students use ethical decision-making skills to defend their position in a series of character education scenarios.

Leadership Development—Each group will elect officers and send representatives to the Explorer Leadership Association program.

Volunteer Opportunities—Christmas Project, Scouting for Food and more.

Student Achievement Incentives—Explorer participants have access to two camp facilities to reinforce positive behavior.  Both sites offer lodging, mountain biking, team building courses and many more outdoor activities.

Social Activities—Explorer participants are also encouraged to take part in activities offered to all members such as:

Explorer Ski Trip—A one-day excursion to Winterplace Ski Resort

Exploring After Dark—An all night annual adventure that allows Explorers to visit businesses in the early morning hours.

Explorer Leadership Association—A group of youth leaders from each Explorer Post that meet monthly to develop leadership skills and coordinate activities for their groups.
